Championship Saturday Roundup: Newcastle Move Five Points Clear At The Top As Norwich Lose And Villa Win

Newcastle moved five points clear at the top of the Championship with victory at third-placed Huddersfield.
With second-placed Brighton losing at Nottingham Forest, Newcastle knew a win would extend their lead and give them an 11-point cushion over the Terriers.

Matt Ritchie put the Magpies in front from the penalty spot and Daryl Murphy made it two with an angled finish.

Aaron Mooy pulled one back from the spot but Dwight Gayle tapped in after substitute keeper Joel Coleman's slip.

Sheffield Wednesday consolidated their place in the play-offs with a thumping win over Norwich.

Ross Wallace gave the Owls an early lead with a finish into an empty net from 40 yards after John Ruddy failed to get distance on a clearance.

Jordan Rhodes made it 2-0 with a header from Fernando Forestieri's cross before Cameron Jerome pulled one back only for Morgan Fox to make it 3-1 at the break.

Rhodes headed his second before Forestieri scored a fine free-kick.

Aston Villa eased to their third straight win to heap more misery on Championship bottom side Rotherham.

Millers defender Will Vaulks' turned in Albert Adomah's ball across the face of goal to give Villa a deserved lead.

Jonathan Kodjia sealed the win late on, firing a shot in off the post from the edge of the area.

Rotherham keeper Lewis Price made a string of fine saves to limit the damage as Villa chalked up their third win in eight days.
