Barcelona Set To Release Mathieu

And it looks as though the 33-year-old will join Sporting Lisbon.
Jeremy Mathieu will be released by Barcelona in the coming days, despite having a year left on his contract, Goal reports.

The defender, who will turn 34 in October, played only 16 matches for the Camp Nou side last season in all competitions, mustering a single goal.

Reports from Radio Kanal Barcelona suggest that Mathieu’s contract will be terminated in the coming hours, freeing up €2.4 million (£2million) of wages.

Mathieu was not in new coach Ernesto Valverde’s plans following a disappointing season and the emergence and signing of Marlon Santos.

Turkish side Fenerbahce had looked set to land him and there was also interest from Greek outfit Olympiacos.

But It is expected that the former France international defender will join Sporting CP on a free transfer.

Mathieu has won the Champions League, two Liga titles and the Copa del Rey on three occasions.
