Real Madrid vs Manchester United
UEFA Super Cup 2017
Date: Tuesday, 8th August 2017
Kick-off at 19:45 Nigerian Time
Venue: Philip II Arena, Skopje (Macedonia).
It will be the second meeting this summer between the two UEFA’s reigning Champions.

Their first clash resulted in a 1-1 draw, when they met in California as a part of their pre-season tour, after which United went on to triumph 2-1 thanks to the lacklustre penalty shootout.

Real haven’t exactly had a pre-season to boast about. They managed only 1 win in four games, which came against the MLS all stars. Besides their defeat at the hands of United, they suffered losses against Manchester City and arch rivals Barcelona.

Manchester United on the other hand, have enjoyed a far better pre-season. The Red Devils have won 6 out of their 7 games, losing only to Barcelona.

The Los Blancos reached here for the second consecutive year by defeating Juventus 4-1 in the Champions League final at Cardiff last year. Meantime, United won the Europa League against Ajax by a comfortable 2-0 margin.

Real Madrid made 5 appearances at the Super Cup and were won the title three time. Last year, the team managed by Zidane defeated fellow La Liga rivals Sevilla 3-2 in extra time.

Manchester United lifted the trophy in their first ever appearance in 1991. They defeated Red Star Belgrade by a solitary goal. They made two more appearance since then, losing out to Lazio in 1999 and Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.

Real Madrid Zinedine Zidane has seen the likes of James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata leave in order to get a chance at first team football.  Cristiano Ronaldo has been doing with personal problems, but he should be set to go, as well as the rest of the team being ready for this big-time fixture.

Manchester United Jose Mourinho has two suspensions to deal with for this match.  After a red card against Celta Vigo last season, Eric Bailly will be miss out.  Fellow defender Phil Jones is also suspended due to an incident with anti-doping officials.  Meanwhile, two more possible defensive players are out with injury as Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young are set to miss out.  New men Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic are expected to play a big role from the off.

Real Madrid Los Blancos have two draws, two losses, and a win in their last five.  They won the UCL Final over Juventus 1-4 before drawing their first preseason fixture against this Manchester United side 1-1 and going on to lose on penalties.  Then came a 4-1 loss to Manchester City and 2-3 loss against Barcelona before drawing 1-1 with MLS All Stars, before winning on penalties.

Manchester United The Red Devils have three wins, a draw, and a loss in their five preseason friendlies.  In the ICC, they won 2-0 over rivals Manchester City before drawing 1-1 against Real Madrid (winning on penalties).  Next came a 1-0 loss against Barcelona before they defeated Valerenga 0-3 away.  They most recently played Sampdoria and won 2-1 in Dublin.

  • These sides have met a total of six times now.  Two of those meetings, the most recent two, have been in the ICC, while the other four were in the Champions League.
  • United have three wins to Real's two, while one draw has been played out.
  • After tonight, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will be the first manager to manage 3 different teams in the UEFA Super Cup, having previously led Chelsea and FC Porto in the competition.
  • Should Manchester United lose to Real Madrid tonight, Jose Mourinho will be the first manager to lose the UEFA Super Cup with three different teams.
  • 7 out of the previous 8 UEFA Super Cups have been won by a La Liga side.
  • Real Madrid have won 3 UEFA Super Cups. Only Barcelona and AC Milan have more(5).
  • Real Madrid have finished as UEFA Super Cup runners up on 5 previous occasions.\
  • Manchester United has previously won 1 UEFA Super Cup and finished as runners up on 2 previous occasions.

Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester United –  Real Madrid are favorites in this match and they will do everything within their powers not to disappoint.

Los Blancos will no doubt be looking to put their awful pre-season behind them and will be significantly boosted by the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. However, United are in better form and Jose Mourinho will be anxious for a victory over his former side.

Though both teams are expected to be at full strength, which makes this to be a good competition, but Real’s quality should see them overcome the Red Devils.
