Arsenal vs FC Koln
UEFA Europa League Group Stage - Season 2017/18
Date: 14th September, 2017
Kick Off Time: 20:05 -Nigerian Time
Venue: Emirates Stadium, London, England

The North London side were automatic qualifiers to the Europa League after they narrowly missed out on securing a place in Europe’s premier club competition (Champions League) for the first time in 20 years.

Koln, too, made it to the Europa League group stage automatically, by finishing fifth in Bundesliga last season. T

hey have started their 2017-18 league campaign in disastrous fashion though, rooted at the bottom of the table after three losses in as many games, and having scored just the solitary goal.

TEAM NEWS:

Arsenal - Arsene Wenger is still without center midfielder Santi Cazorla.  We do expect heavy rotation here, though, as Wenger is surely in a battle for his job with Premier League results.

FC Koln - Peter Stoger will have no injuries or suspensions to deal with after goalkeeper Timo Horn recovered from injury to return this weekend.

TEAM FORM:

Arsenal - The English club have had a mixed bag of fortune thus far.  After winning the Community Shield, they defeated Leicester before a particularly ugly 4-0 loss away to Liverpool.  They did rebound on Saturday, though, with a 3-0 win at home to Bournemouth.

Cologne - The German side are in very worrying form at the moment, having lost each of its three opening Bundesliga matches.  Most troubling was the 3-0 loss away to Augsburg on Saturday that leaves them looking like relegation contenders at this early stage.

PREDICTED LINEUPS:

Arsenal (3-4-3): Ospina; Mertesacker, Holding, Kolasinac; Debuchy, Coquelin, Elneny, Iwobi; Alexis, Walcott, Giroud
Arsenal 3-4-3 football formation

Cologne (4-4-2): Horn; Klunter, Sorensen, Heintz, Hector; Hoger, Lehmann, Zoller, Bittencourt; Osako, Cordoba

1.FC Köln 4-4-2 football formation

KEY STATS:
  • The UEFA Cup Final in 2000 was the last time the Gunners were in UEFA's secondary club competition.
  • Arsenal and Cologne have never met in official competition before, but they have played a pair of friendlies before.
  • Both of them were played in Cologne, and both were won by the Gunners.  In 2012, they won 0-4 and in 2011 they won 1-2.
  • Arsenal are facing a German opposition in Europe for the seventh consecutive season – the Gunners have faced Bayern Munich in four of those, Borussia Dortmund in three and Schalke once.
  • Arsenal are making their debut in the UEFA Europa League group stage, having missed out on Champions League qualification for the first time under Arsene Wenger.
  • On Thursday, FC Koln will become the 64th different that Arsene Wenger will face as the Arsenal manager.
  • FC Koln are yet to win a match in England, having previously played five times in the country (D2 L3) – overall W2 D4 L6.
PREDICTION:

Arsenal 3-1 FC Koln - The match won't be an easy one for the visiting team. And as Arsenal get set to play in the Europa League group stage for the very first time, they will do everything within their power to end the game with a win. Any other result would be a huge shock.
