Bonucci Cries Foul After Suffering Broken Nose During Sweden-Italy Game

Italy lost the first leg of two crucial playoff matches against Sweden last night and face the chance of missing out on appearing in the World Cup for the first time since 1958.
After the match, Leonardo Bonucci criticised the referee for not sending off Ola Toivonen for an aerial challenge.

Bonucci got caught with an elbow inside the opening minute, which left the AC Milan defender in pain.

The centre-back was clear about it and told Sky Sport Italia:
"'He broke my nose after 30 seconds and should’ve been sent off. There’s not much you can say other than that.

"A referee with greater character would’ve sent off at least one of the Swedish players. We knew Sweden would play the long ball and flick it on, so they created very little, but we should’ve been quicker when moving the ball around."
The Italian remains hopeful that his country will still qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
He added: "We have to believe in what we’re doing to the last moment of the second leg at San Siro on Monday."
