That is a bit of a surprise given the names available to them for sure.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are also in a lower position than expected. They are in fourth with 27 points, two above fifth place Sevilla and eight points behind leaders Barcelona already.

At home, Bilbao have typically been good over the years. But this year they have let down a lot. They have two wins, two draws, and two losses there so far. They have met big sides there of late as well, and it hasn't gone great.

As for Real, their away form started off very well. They won four straight, but have since lost to Girona and then drawn at Atletico.

Athletic Bilbao - Manager Jose Angel Ziganda will be missing center midfielders Benat Etxebarria and Mikel Vesga, left back Enric Saborit, and winger Iker Muniain due to injury. Center back Aymeric Laporte will be out with a suspension, and fellow center back Yeray Alvarez remains out with cancer.

Real Madrid - Coach Zinedine Zidane will be without winger Marco Asensio for this tough trip. Center back Sergio Ramos looks set to feature after breaking his nose, and right back Dani Carvajal looks set to play as he's suspended in midweek. Gareth Bale returned on Tuesday in the Copa del Rey to help rescue them, so he is back available. Expect heavy rotation after that escape as well.

Bilbao have two losses, two draws, and a win in their last five matches.

Real have two draws and three wins in their last five matches.

  • Bilbao have struggled in front of goal, scoring just 14 goals in 13 matches.
  • Los Blancos head into this on the back of four straight wins over Athletic in matches which all saw both teams on target.
