Man City Break Club Transfer Record To Sign Laporte From Athletic Bilbao

Manchester City have signed French defender Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao for a club record fee of £57m (N27bn).
The club's previous record fee was the £55m (N26bn) paid for Kevin de Bruyne in 2015.

Laporte, 23, has put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal to finalise his move to England. The centre-back has played 19 times for France at Under-21 level.

Laporte, who will wear the No 14 shirt, said after the signing:
"I am very happy to be here.  'City are a club with a lot of ambition and they are one of the best teams in Europe.

"I am looking forward to working under Pep Guardiola and trying to help the club to achieve success.

"It means a lot that the club have shown faith in me and I am excited to get started."
Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, added:
"We are delighted to have signed Aymeric.
"We have assessed defensive options and he is a player we have admired for a long time.

"With his quality and ability to play out from the back, we feel Aymeric will fit in perfectly with Pep Guardiola’s playing style."
The Man City boss Pep Guardiola defended the club's spending in the 2017-18 windows.
Laporte's girlfriend Sara Botello posted this picture on Instagram as he joined City

"I understand the criticism, but we have spent £300m on six players," Guardiola said, adding the £43m (N20.5bn) spent on midfielder Bernardo Silva to the outlay on defensive players.

"Others have done it on two. We had a lot of older players out of contract. To compete we needed to spend. A club can decide to spend on two players. We did it in a different way.

"We understand the inflation of the market. We have spent on six players and others have done it in one or two. We accept criticism, but more important is that they play well."
