UCL: Shakhtar Donetsk vs AS Roma Match Preview, Possible Lineups And Prediction

Shakhtar Donetsk have beaten Serie A opposition at the Donbass Arena already this season, beating Napoli 2-1 in the opening round of UEFA Champions League group stage fixtures.

UEFA Champions League
Date: Wednesday, 21st February 2018
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: OSC Metalist (Kharkiv).
That, combined with Roma's poor away record in European competition, should give Donetsk plenty to be encouraged by ahead of tonight’s fixture.

Donetsk impressed in beating Napoli, Feyenoord and Manchester City in their three home group games this season, and deserve to be labelled as favourites for Wednesday - whether they can do enough to win the whole tie, however, remains to be seen.

Shakhtar Donetsk - Darijo Srna remains provisionally suspended after failing a drugs test. Dodo has been signed as a long-term replacement, but Bogdan Butko is likely to continue at right back on Wednesday. Yaroslav Rakitsky, Fred, Ivan Petryak and Ruslan Fomin were all suspended for Shakhtar's return to domestic action, but are available to play in the Champions League. Only Maksim Malyshev is an injury concern.

Roma - Maxime Gonalons is out with a calf injury, while Rick Karsdorp and Jonathan Silva are long-term absentees with ligament injuries. Daniele de Rossi replaced Kevin Strootman in the starting XI at the weekend, while Diego Perotti and Aleks Kolarov were also rested.

Shakhtar Donetsk won 5-0 at home to Chornomorets on their return to competitive action on Friday night after the lengthy Ukrainian winter break. Their mid-season break included friendly wins against Dinamo Zagreb, Slavia Prague and AIK and defeats to Copenhagen and Jiangsu Suning.

Roma ended a seven-game winless streak by beating Hellas Verona 1-0 at the start of the month, and have won their two games since then too. A 5-2 home win against Benevento was followed by a 2-0 victory away at Udinese. Cengiz Under opened the scoring in that game, having already scored two in the home win the previous week.

Shakhtar Donetsk (4-2-3-1): Pyatov; Butko, Ordets, Rakitskiy, Ismaily; Fred, Stepanenko; Marlos, Taison, Bernard; Ferreyra.

Roma (4-3-3): Alisson; Peres, Manolas, Fazio, Kolarov; Naingollan, De Rossi, Strootman; Under, Dzeko, Perotti.

  • This will be the fifth Champions League game between the two teams, following a two-legged clash in the 2011 quarter-finals and two games in the 2006 group stage.
  • At home Shakhtar have never conceded, winning 1-0 and 3-0, while at Roma the hosts won 4-0 in 2006 but lost 3-2 in 2011.
  • Shakhtar have faced Serie A opposition already in this year's competition, beating Napoli 2-1 at home but losing 3-0 away.

Shakhtar 2-1 Roma  —   Shakhtar Donetsk have won three from three at home in this year's competition, while Roma have only won one of their last 13 Champions League away games - and that was a trip to minnows Qarabag. The Ukrainian hosts are favourites, but Roma are capable of grabbing a vital away goal.
