UCL Wednesday Round 16 First Leg: Liverpool Thrash Porto As Real Madrid Beat PSG

Sadio Mane scored a hat-trick as Liverpool won 5-0 at Porto to virtually assure themselves a UEFA Champions League quarter-final place. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid beat Paris St Germain 3-1 in the first leg of their UCL round-of-16 tie.

FC Porto 0 - 5 Liverpool
Sadio Mane scored a hat-trick and Mohamed Salah continued his phenomenal run with a 30th of the season as Liverpool won 5-0 at Porto to virtually assure themselves a UEFA Champions League quarter-final place.

Mane opened the scoring when home goalkeeper Jose Sa failed to hold his placed strike.

Mohamed Salah, whose brilliant individual effort made him the second fastest to the 30-goal landmark in the club's history and the quickest for 122 years, then showed wonderful composure to steer the ball home for Liverpool's second.

With two away goals scored, the visitors could have been forgiven for taking a more conservative approach from then on but instead they went for more.

A swift Liverpool counter-attack ended with Sa spilling Roberto Firmino's shot into Mane's path and the striker made no mistake, before Firmino scored his 21st of the season, sweeping home James Milner's cross.

Mane got his third with a driven strike late on to become the first Liverpool player to score a hat-trick away from home in Europe since Michael Owen in 2002, and the second ever.

It was indeed a comfortable night in the Estadio do Dragao as the Reds' first knockout encounter in nine years at this level passed without major incident.

Liverpool's 28 goals is more than anyone else in the UCL this term, with 25 coming in their last five games.

Liverpool will expect to complete the job when they host Porto in the return leg at Anfield on Tuesday, 6 March.

Real Madrid 3 - 1 Paris Saint Germain
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid beat Paris St Germain 3-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Bernabeu.

The French side took the lead through Adrien Rabiot but Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot just before half-time.

The Portugal forward then put the hosts ahead with seven minutes left before left-back Marcelo's close-range finish gave the holders a two-goal cushion to take to Paris.

The second leg is March 6 at the Parc des Princes.
